Alliance CRMA 8 will utilize the Blended Learning for Alliance School Transformation (BLAST) education model, which provides each student with a laptop and uses a wide variety of technological tools to prepare them for success in college and future careers.  To read more about the BLAST model, click here.


Alliance CRMA 8 opened fall 2014 in East Los Angeles. This almost entirely Latino community is primarily home to Mexican-American families, many of whom are recent immigrants to the United States.

Alliance CRMA 8 will be located near Alliance Media Arts and Entertainment Design High School, which serves students in grades 9-12.


99% Latino and 1% Other, 27% English Language Learners, 93% free or reduced meal program participants.

Principal Profile

Melissa Chew will serve as founding principal for Alliance College-Ready Middle Academy 8.  For the past two years, Ms. Chew has served as Principal at Alliance Environmental Science and Technology High School, the tenth highest performing high school in Los Angeles. Ms. Chew was also Alliance ESAT's founding science teacher and credits much of her learning to her five years at this highly successful school. Ms. Chew began her career at John Muir Middle School in South Los Angeles as a science teacher, department chair, and instructional coach. She worked in the Los Angeles Unified School District for seven years before joining the Alliance. This is now her twelfth year in education. Ms. Chew holds a bachelor's in Physiological Science and a master's in Education from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a master's in Educational Administration from California State University, Northridge.
