2020 Teacher of the Year Award
Great teachers change us, make us believe in ourselves, and brighten our outlook on the world and our future in it. Alliance Teacher of the Year awards gives special recognition to teachers who are nominated by their school communities for their dedication inside and beyond the classroom, and their exceptional ability to engage scholars and activate their excitement for education.
Lisa King - Math Teacher, Winner
Alliance Dr. Olga Mohan High School
Ms. King is described as an amazing educator who engages her scholars in a remarkable way and provides support every step of the way. The personalized math lessons she creates for her scholars help them achieve more than they thought possible.
Daniel Helena - English Teacher, Finalist
Alliance Kory Hunter Middle School
Mr. Helena is a cheerleader without a megaphone! His celebratory approach to teaching quickly makes his classroom a space in which scholars feel safe and valued. He uses unique handshakes and games to infuse his classroom with joy. He then leverages those strong relationships with his scholars to convert that energy into a passion for learning and literacy.
Xochil Johansen - Special Eduation Teacher, Finalist
Alliance Marc & Eva Stern Math and Science School
Ms. Johansen is a special education teacher who feels privileged to be working with her scholars. She feels tasked with empowering them to push against any stigma they may encounter. Her academic goals for her scholars reach beyond one particular class or even one year. Her goal is for them to see their potential as she sees it; to recognize that an IEP is a way to success, not a barrier to it.
