Alliance Merkin Middle School utilizes the Blended Learning for Alliance School Transformation (BLAST) education model, which provides each student with a laptop and uses a wide variety of technological tools to prepare them for success in college and future careers. Alliance Merkin Middle School is located in the Pico-Union neighborhood west of downtown Los Angeles. Pico-Union serves as a point-of-entry for many Latino immigrants, and is primarily populated by families from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Hondouras.


Alliance Merkin is part of the Alliance Gertz-Ressler/Richard Merkin 6-12 Education Complex. The school shares a campus with Alliance Gertz-Ressler High School. Alliance Merkin students are automatically eligible to enroll at Alliance Gertz-Ressler in 9th grade without participating in a public lottery.

Principal Profile

Meghan Van Pelt has been an educator for the past ten years. Prior to becoming an Administrator at Alliance Richard Merkin Middle School, she was a teacher and then instructional coach at Alliance William and Carol Ouchi High School. Additionally, she supported World Language teachers across the Alliance CMO by developing and running professional developments. Ms. Van Pelt possess a BA in French Commercial Studies from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and an MA in Education Leadership from Loyola Marymount University with a specific focus on Charter School Leadership.
