A Healthy Choices Fair The link between strong bodies and healthy minds was the driving force of the first Health Fair held for parents and students at College-Ready Academy High School 4.
“Our parents suggested it,” says Lucia Carinio, Parent Liaison for the school. “It is difficult for many of our families to access health care and community services. So we brought them together.” Exhibitors ranging from UCLA Health Services and Clinica Romero to Lenscrafters and LA County’s Nutrition Program were busy screening more than 250 parents and children. Testing for diabetes proved valuable and timely; the doctors identified one woman who tested positive and several students as prediabetic. They were referred to medical services right away. The Fair’s focus on maintaining good health and making good choices drew the large crowd. Face-to-face conversations with County representatives about public social services, immunizations, and mental health services went on for four hours. The lighter side of the event delighted families, too. Twenty cosmetology students from LA Trade Tech provided free haircuts and manicures. Principal Emilio Pack got one of the haircuts. Students report that he “looked cool.” “Our parents’ request for a health event was on target,” says Assistant Principal Erik Elward. “The health care contacts were so valuable as was the family atmosphere on campus. The Fair will become an annual event.” |
