Blueprints for Parents

Active Alliance parents are going back to school to build skills that empower them personally and the way they participate in the lives of their children.
It was commencement for parents at College-Ready Middle Academy, and the graduates showed their certificates proudly. They successfully completed a parent education program designed to strengthen parenting skills at home and increase parent involvement at school. Called “Blueprints for Parents,” the course was completed by parents at Heritage College-Ready Academy High School, too. The workshops require parent attendance weekly for a month.
“The curriculum is character and values-based,” explains Mary Silva, the Director of Parent Community Outreach for Alliance schools. “We explore values like responsibility and respect by defining them and then learning how to reinforce them for their children.” The curriculum, based on proven programs from nationally known Families in Schools, is based on the fundamental that parents are the child’s first teacher. “Nothing is more effective than a parent who is a good role model,” Ms. Silva adds.
