Meet the Class of 2013

Loud applause and cheers erupted from students and parents as Principal Howard Lappin described their new school. “Welcome to our community of learners, where school is safe, expectations are high, classes are small, and we know how to prepare you for a four-year college.”

That began the orientation meeting for the 135 newcomers who become the next ninth grade class at College-Ready Academy High School beginning on August 29th.  With no advertising to the community or recruiting at middle schools, more than 160 eighth graders applied to join CRAHS’ Class of 2013. (At College-Ready Schools, classes are identified by the year they will graduate from college, rather than from high school.). “It was all word of mouth this year,” Mr. Lappin said.

There is nothing “second class” about this new group of students, except that they are the second group to enroll in the Alliance’s trailblazing high school.  Students come from six different public middle schools, three charter schools, and two parochial schools. 80% are Hispanic; 20% are African-American. “All come from families who chose us,” added Mr. Lappin. “They tell us they are drawn by the safety of our campus, by the academic rigor, the uniforms, and by the policy that we call home every day a student is absent, even the first day.” He calls students and parents “very motivated,” and predicts that the parent partnerships required of Alliance charter school families will strengthen the academic achievement expected from every student.

The Class of 2013 will have its own “first.” They will attend school at the College-Ready Annex at 2009 W. Martin Luther King Blvd.
