2016 Alliance Teacher of the Year

At the heart of all Alliance schools are great teachers. Great teachers are important - they change us, make us believe in ourselves and brighten our outlook on the world and our future in it.  To give special recognition and honor to exceptional teaching, school communities are given the opportunity to nominate teachers who have an exceptional ability to engage students and activate their excitement for education. We are honored to share the exceptional teachers who were selected among all who were nominated to receive the Alliance 2016 Teacher of the Year award during Teacher Appreciation Week, when schools across Alliance celebrate teachers for their dedication both inside and outside of the classroom!

Brendan Wallace - Math Teacher

Alliance Marc and Eva Stern Math and Science School
Since becoming the calculus teacher, he restarted the BC Calculus program at Stern MASS and created the Multivariable Calculus program from scratch, which is now a dually enrolled class with Cal State LA (most math majors take the class as college sophomores). Last year, his AP Calculus students had a 90% passage rate on their AP exam with 50% of them scoring a 5! And since becoming the calculus teacher, he has tripled the number of students taking calculus classes.

2016 Alliance Teacher of the Year Finalists

Lindsay Rojas - English and Historical Literacy Teacher

Alliance Ouchi O'Donovan 6-12 Complex
Lindsey is an 8th grade English teacher and Literacy Coach at Alliance Christine O'Donovan Middle School. She uses the relationships she has with her students to connect the learning in the classroom to their lives outside of school.

Ashley Dester - English Literature and Expository Reading and Writing Teacher

Alliance Ouchi O'Donovan 6-12 Complex

Ashley is notorious for dressing in character based on the literature read in class. Ever dedicated to making literature come to life, Ms. Dester spoke to us from home while on maternity leave - dressed in costume of course!

Elizabeth Dean - Resource Teacher for Special Education

Alliance College-Ready Academy High School 16

Elizabeth played a pivotal role in designing and implementing an inclusive special education model that held students to high expectations while delivering high-quality, individualized instruction.
